House Renovation

I designed the renovation of my own home. I was not the general contractor: my contribution was the design, and I now live with the result.

The problem

A renovation turns preferences into decisions that are expensive to change later. Aesthetic choices also have to work as a home, not just as a design proposal.

The benefit

A home shaped around how I want to live. The result is not something I handed off and stopped seeing; it is a design I experience every day.

Project highlights

• A hands-on design role. I shaped the renovation's design and aesthetic direction without claiming responsibility for general contracting.
• A completed, lived-in result. The renovation became the home I wanted, with the opportunity to see which decisions worked in everyday use.

What I learned

Lots went right, and some things did not. The project taught me about design, taste, bureaucracy, and the distance between a plan and its execution.
