As part of a goal setting exercise, I wrote myself a letter. The letter was written as a CEO for a company with one employee: me. The only purpose of the company is to live a good life.
“
Life is short.
Make the most of it.
Never forget that your goals and ambitions don't matter if can't have fun and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Nothing matters if you don't have anyone to share it with.
Nothing matters if you aren't as healthy as you can be to enjoy it.
”
The single minded pursuit of goals at the expense of all other things is not a life I want to live. I do have goals and I do work hard to achieve them, but killing myself to acheive them is not the point of my life.
For what its worth, I'm enjoying myself and getting shit done.
This philosphy values balance, and as a result, is completely incompatible with a pursuit of being the absolute best at a single thing. A goal to be number one in the world cannot be achieved with this kind of balance. I am at peace with this.
However, this philosophy is compatible with being objecively better than most people at many things. You can perform better than 50%, 20%, or even 10% percent of the population at many things and still strike a good balance in your life.
